This is a 1970’s Pilot Maki-e Sakura Cherry Blossom fountain pen. This pen features beautiful Gold Maki-E artwork depicting cherry blossoms over a red lacquer base. This pen also has an 18K gold Fine nib. Pen is in very good condition. Pen shows some light handling wear. There are a couple minor spots as well. Retail hang tag remains, but the tag is for a Medium nib. Retail was 50,000 yen in the 1970s. The maki-e used for this pen is known as Kirigane, a variation of Hyomon technique. The artist cuts gold into square or triangular shapes and pastes them on the surface of the pen. Urushi and gold dust is painted over the design. It is hand polished with charcoal or oil.
